Jet Sweep out of Singleback Deuce Close motions a receiver across the formation pre-snap to take the handoff on a sweep path toward the sideline, with the frontside blockers washing down to seal the edge. The diagram shows the ball carrier taking the jet motion handoff and immediately turning the corner, hitting the perimeter behind the two TEs and outside blockers rather than pressing into the box. This is a pure run play designed to attack edge speed and outrun overpursuing defenses, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since there is no route concept to read.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a linebacker or slot corner flowing with the jet motion pre-snap, since that defender is the primary threat to blow up the sweep before it develops. Check the edge defender or outside TE alignment on the play side, if he is crashing hard inside on the snap the alley opens up wide for the ball carrier. Defenses that stay disciplined and mirror the motion with a scrape exchange linebacker will shut this down quickly, so avoid forcing the run into a defense that has already shown edge discipline. Fast flow defenses and aggressive run blitzes from the perimeter are the biggest counter to this play since they eliminate the space the sweep needs to develop. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if the safety stays deep and does not add a run fit to the edge, this play has a clean lane to the sideline.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing early, then check the defensive reaction before the snap to confirm they are biting on the motion.
This play hits fastest against defenses that do not shift a defender to match the jet motion, so if the defense stays static in its shell, snap it immediately.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from this same set so defenses cannot key on the motion and have to respect both the perimeter run and the play action off it.
Best called on early downs or in space-creating situations like 1st and 10 when defenses are still guessing on run fits, and avoid it into heavy edge blitz looks since there is no lead blocker to clean up penetration.
User the backside TE or fullback-type blocker if available to seal the first defender off the edge, since winning that initial edge block often decides the play.
