PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel sells the jet sweep fake to hold the linebackers before releasing three routes downfield. The backside X runs a corner route off the play-action fake, the inline TE on the strong side runs a deep post that splits the safeties, and the underneath receiver runs a wide drift route across the middle to the flat as a checkdown against the run fake. The primary read progression starts with the deep post for the explosive shot, works to the corner route on the boundary if the safety jumps the post, and comes down to the drift route underneath as the safety valve, making this a play-action shot play designed to beat aggressive run defense and single-high shells.
Pre-snap, check if the free safety is aligned deep in the middle of the field, indicating single-high man or zone coverage that leaves the post route vulnerable to a one-on-one with the safety. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the jet sweep fake or bite on the run action, the middle of the field opens up for the post route and the drift route sitting underneath. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender dropping into a deep middle lurk, since a rangy safety sitting on the post route can jump the throw and turn it into a turnover. Cover 3 with the free safety rotating late is the toughest shell for this play since it takes away the post and forces you into the tighter corner route window against the sideline. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play wins big, since the TE post can separate against a linebacker or slower safety chasing from depth.
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when the defense is keying run based on your play-action tendency being low.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, single-high shells with the free safety cheating up are the best trigger to take the deep post shot immediately off the play fake.
If the defense shows two-high shells, hot route the drift route into a deeper crossing route or work the corner route first since the post will be crowded by the extra safety help.
Sequence this play after running Mtn HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk from the same Deuce Close set so the linebackers bite hard on the jet motion and run fake, opening up the play-action window.
Use jet motion pre-snap to draw the defense's eyes and linebacker flow before the snap, then let the play-action fake finish the job of freezing the second level.
