Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since that usually signals man coverage underneath, which is exactly what this crosser concept is designed to exploit. Watch cornerback depth at the line, tight press alignment often means man match responsibilities that will get picked off by the crossing traffic. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into a zone drop instead of chasing the crossers, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 which can undercut the shallow blue drag. Beware user controlled defenders sitting in the passing lanes of the red crosser, since a good user lurking underneath can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 give underneath defenders more support to rally on the crossers, forcing you to rely on the blue drag as a quick outlet instead.

Use this play on second and medium to long or third and medium when defenses are more willing to sit in man coverage and bite on the play fake.

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since the natural rub from the crossing routes gives you a built in pick against man defenders.

Hot route the blue drag into a deeper dig or corner route if you diagnose zone coverage, since the shallow drag gets swallowed easily by underneath zone defenders.

Sell the play fake by holding the ball on the RB fake for a beat before progressing through your reads, this manipulates linebacker run fits and opens throwing lanes for the red crosser.
