PA Post Dig runs out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel with a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before the quarterback works to a two-man route combo on the play side. The outside receiver runs a vertical post to take the top off the coverage while the inside receiver runs a dig underneath, sitting down in the intermediate zone once he clears the traffic. Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high tells you the post has a shot to win over the top if the corner bites on the play-action. Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he drops hard to the flat or widens out, the dig window opens up immediately behind him. Key the safety rotation after the fake, if the safety flows toward the post the quarterback should already be progressing to the dig for the easy completion. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the lurk spot over the middle, this is the biggest threat to the dig route and can bait an interception if the quarterback stares it down. This concept struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with deep half safeties who do not respect the run fake, so avoid calling it against defenses that consistently show two high and hold their depth post snap.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball low and letting the animation play out fully before your first read, this freezes linebackers and opens the throwing lane to the dig.

Check pre-snap for single high safety alignment, if the safety is shaded to the post side, work directly to the dig since the post will be doubled or capped.

Use the post as a clear-out route against man coverage to isolate the dig runner on a linebacker or nickel defender, this is where the explosive gains come from against Cover 3 or Cover 1.

Hot route the backside drag runner into a deeper crossing route if you are facing zone heavy defenses that sit on shallow routes, giving yourself a true outlet against Cover 4 shells.

Pair this play with PA Deep Cross or PA X Post Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the post shot, then come back to PA Post Dig to attack the underneath void once safeties start jumping the vertical routes.
