PA Misdirection out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel sells a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before releasing three routes into the pattern. The backside receiver runs a deep post that stretches the field vertically, the middle yellow route works a deep in that settles as a zone beater over the intermediate hole, and the outside yellow route climbs into a deep comeback breaking away from the sideline. The blue route out of the backfield checks down to the flat as a safety valve while the play design is built to look like an outside run before the quarterback resets to throw. Primary read progression starts with the deep post for an explosive shot, works down to the deep in/comeback combo on the right side against zone drops, and ends with the checkdown to the flat if the pocket collapses or the play-action fake does not draw the linebackers up.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high alignments open up the deep post as the primary explosive shot while two high shells force you into the underneath combo. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake and step up toward the line the deep in and comeback routes will have soft zones behind them to work with. Key the flat defender or curl to flat zone player, if that defender widens to take away the checkout route it usually signals zone coverage and you should climb the ladder to the deep in route instead. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle third or hovering as a lurk threat over the deep in route, since a rangy safety reading the quarterback's eyes can jump that route for a turnover. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells where corners sink and safeties stay deep without biting on the run fake, in those situations lean on the checkdown or move to a different concept from the set.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses expect inside zone or HB Dive out of this personnel, since the play action sells much better against run-heavy defensive tendencies.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the post is less likely to hit for an explosive gain so prioritize the deep in and comeback combo instead.

Use the flat route as your built in answer against Cover 3 or zone blitz looks where linebackers drop hard into the intermediate zones, since the checkdown will be open quickly if the underneath defenders sink.

Pair this call with HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk from the same set earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then dial up PA Misdirection when you see linebackers creeping up to stop the run.

Hot route the deep in receiver to a hitch or curl against aggressive man corners who like to jump routes, this gives you a quicker answer if the defense disguises man coverage with a run blitz look.
