Breakdown

PA Stretch Shot sells outside zone action with a play-action fake before releasing three routes into a deep shot concept. The two yellow routes cross deep from the middle of the formation, one working a deep out to the boundary and the other continuing into a deep corner/post area, creating a natural pick and clear against man coverage. The red route runs a vertical seam up the numbers on the opposite side while the blue route from the backfield releases to the flat as the checkdown and outlet after the play-action fake. Primary read progression starts with the deep crossing routes off the play-action look, works to the vertical seam on the opposite hash if the crossers are covered, and finishes with the backfield flat route as the last resort against pressure or when both levels are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two high safeties pre-snap, this tells you the deep crossers have a clean throwing lane before the safety can rotate down. If you see a single high safety or Cover 3 shell, the vertical seam route becomes riskier since the deep defender can sit in the middle of the field and undercut the crossing routes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest, since the natural pick from the crossing routes creates separation against trailing defenders. Zone blitzes or nano blitzes off the edge are the biggest threat since the play-action fake holds the offensive line just long enough for a well timed pressure package to collapse the pocket before routes develop. If the flat defender widens with the blue route immediately at the snap, that is a strong indicator of man coverage and you should trust the crossing routes to win against trailing defenders.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the crossing routes will have room to work underneath them before the shot routes climb. If the corner is playing tight man on the red seam route, hot route it to a slant or speed it up to win before the safety can rotate over. Against zone shells, key the flat defender: if he sinks with the crossing routes, the blue flat route out of the backfield is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Pair this play with HB Stretch or Mtn HB Stretch earlier in a series so the defense respects the outside zone action, then hit them with this shot play once linebackers start crashing downhill on run fits.
