Mtn Shuffle Y-Wheel is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel designed to hit a big wheel route from the Y tight end after selling run action to the mountain (Mtn) shuffle motion. The offensive line and fullback/H-back sell zone run flow while the Y releases late into a wheel that stretches the sideline behind any flowing linebacker or shallow zone defender, with underneath crossers and a flat route occupying the middle defenders and the corner. This is a man beater and play-action shot concept, and the primary read progression starts with the Y-wheel against man coverage or blown zone assignments, then works down to the underneath crossers if the wheel is capped by a deep half safety.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the linebackers are showing run blitz or heavy box alignment, since that opens the seam for the Y tight end to release clean into the wheel. Watch the flat defender or the outside cornerback; if he sinks with the wheel route instead of staying flat footed on the flat threat, the underneath crossers should be wide open against zone coverage. Post snap, key any user controlled linebacker dropping into a shallow zone or lurking the middle, since he can undercut the crossing routes if he reads the play-action fake quickly. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, the deep half or deep third defender responsible for the sideline is the key defender; if he stays deep and outside, throw underneath, if he steps up on run action, take the wheel over the top. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal look for this play, while two high safety shells with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the play fake are what shuts this concept down.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs, first or second and short to medium, when the defense is keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies from Singleback Deuce Close.

Check the safety alignment before the snap; a single high safety or a defense stacked in the box tells you the wheel has a soft matchup on a linebacker or nickel defender.

If you see two deep safeties presnap, expect the wheel to be capped and be ready to work the underneath crossing routes and the flat route as your secondary progression.

Motion the H-back or use jet motion if available to get a free release read on the defense; if the defender assigned to the motion man follows across the formation, it confirms man coverage and you should lock onto the Y-wheel immediately.
