Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Singleback Deuce Close with 12 personnel, showing a bunched tight end look with the fullback or split TE offset to the weak side. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level while the HB reads the leverage of the playside defenders. This is a straightforward run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the primary read progression starts at the play side A-gap before bouncing to the B-gap or backside cutback lane based on the flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Read the strong side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting tight in the box at four yards or less he is likely crashing the playside gap and daring you to cut back. Check safety alignment over the top, a single high safety cheating toward the strength of the formation signals extra run support and favors an early cutback read. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled Mike linebacker flowing hard downhill, this is the primary defender who can blow up Inside Zone Split if he reads the zone blocks fast. This run beats light boxes and zone fronts that flow late, but it gets shut down by gap-sound 46 or 4-4 looks stacked with extra defenders inside the tackles. Watch the backside defensive end for penetration, an unblocked crasher forces the back to commit to the cutback lane immediately or lose yardage.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to force linebackers to declare their gap before the snap since Inside Zone Split thrives when the defense shows its hand early.

Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the defensive line is not stacked with extra run defenders in the box, since the zone blocking scheme struggles against heavy eight-man fronts.

Hot route the split TE into a quick out or seal block if you see an overloaded edge blitz coming off that side, this keeps the alley from collapsing on the cutback.

Pair this play with PA Boot Corner Post or PA Deep Cross from the same set to keep linebackers honest, since both plays start from the identical Deuce Close look and punish defenders who bite hard on run fits.

Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the count and set up shot plays like PA Deep Read later in the drive.
