Mtn Duo is a Duo run concept out of Singleback Deuce Close with 12 personnel, showing pre-snap motion across the formation before the snap. The offensive line double teams at the point of attack and climbs to the second level while the HB reads the double teams and picks his lane, aiming to squeeze it up into a vertical crease rather than bounce outside. This is a downhill power run play designed to beat light boxes and over-aggressive linebacker flow, with the primary read being the HB identifying the double team leverage and pressing the hole before deciding to cut backside or bang it front side.
Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line at 3 to 4 yards they are likely reading run fast and can beat the double teams before they climb. Watch the safety rotation after the motion, if a safety cheats down into the box pre-snap this becomes a run blitz look that can blow up the Duo scheme. Identify user-controlled defenders lurking in the A or B gap, since Duo relies on the double team climbing cleanly and a user spy sitting in the hole disrupts the timing. This play struggles against a 6 man front with an extra defender crashing downhill, so if you see a nano blitz alignment or a crashing edge defender pre-snap, expect penetration before the double team locks in. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading their gaps at normal depth are the easiest shells to run this against, since the double team has time to climb and seal the second level.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety, which tells you whether you are getting a light or stacked box.
Run this play into a light box with 6 or fewer defenders showing, since Duo blocking relies on double teams winning at the point of attack rather than a lead blocker handling extra defenders.
Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action shots later in the drive.
Pair this with Mtn PA Boot Screen or PA Mtn Spider Y Leak from the same set since the identical formation and motion sell the run fake and freeze linebackers.
If the defense keys the motion and crashes the edge, consider switching to Mtn HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk to attack the perimeter instead of forcing it into a loaded box.
