This is a power run play designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebacker flow, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the double team, read the play side linebacker fill, and cut backside if the alley is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits flat footed reading the double team the cutback lane opens for the HB. Key the play side defensive end and 3-technique alignment, a wide 9-technique or shaded 4i can disrupt the double team climb and kill this run before it develops. This play struggles against gap sound run fits with a downhill safety in the box, so identify single high safety rotation pre-snap since that usually signals extra run support. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the play side motion, a disciplined defender staying home in the cutback lane will blow this run up. Blitzes off the edge that beat the fullback or tight end block before the double team locks in are the biggest threat, so watch for a Sam or Will linebacker crashing off the edge pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the motion man, this tells you if you are facing man coverage or a zone shell that stays home. Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action shots later in the set like PA Deep Cross or PA Boot Corner Post. Check the box count before the snap, if there are seven or more defenders in the box consider audibling to a perimeter run like Mtn HB Stretch instead. Pair this play with Mtn Shuffle H-Shake or Mtn Shuffle Y-Wheel on the next snap so the defense has to respect both the interior run action and the play-action off the same formation look.
