Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Deuce Close (12 personnel) is an outside zone run play that sends the entire offensive line and both tight ends flowing laterally toward the play side to stretch the defense horizontally before the back cuts upfield. The diagram shows the HB taking a lateral path behind the line, reading blocks from the play side edge inward as linemen reach block and climb to the second level. This is a zone run play, not a man or zone beater in the pass sense, and it wins by attacking gaps created by pursuit angles and overplayed run fits. The primary read progression starts at the play side edge (bounce), then the play side tackle gap (bang), and finally the cutback lane if backside pursuit overflows.

Defensive Reads

Watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill pre-snap, since aggressive blitz timing can blow up the zone before it develops. Check safety alignment: a single high safety usually means light boxes, which favors the bounce read, while two deep safeties can signal extra run support underneath. Cornerback depth matters, since press corners crashing down on the edge can wall off the stretch and force a quick cutback read. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker: if they crash hard upfield, cut it back immediately behind the double team. Nano blitzes or gap-exchange fronts designed to shoot the backside A-gap are the biggest threat, so keep an eye on backside pursuit speed before committing to the bounce.

Usage Tips

Run this against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since outside zone loses value against stacked fronts. Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at linebacker depth to confirm they are not sitting in run-fit gaps designed to squeeze the stretch. Pair this with Mtn HB Stretch and Fk Slide HB Stretch in the same set to keep defenders guessing on the mesh point and force LBs to hesitate on their fits. Sell the run action hard so play-action shots like PA Boot Corner Post or PA Slide Y Screen off the same look stay effective later in a drive. Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of sub packages built to stop the run.
