FB Dive out of the Tight Split T formation with 32 personnel is a straight downhill run play designed to attack the interior of the defense with the fullback. The diagram shows a tight offensive line with the fullback lined up in the backfield behind the QB, taking the handoff and hitting the A gap or B gap depending on how the defensive front sets up, with the offensive line executing down blocks and double teams up front to seal the interior. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is a one cut decision for the fullback based on which gap opens first off the double team blocks at the point of attack.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the middle linebacker is stacked directly over the center, since that alignment clogs the dive lanes this play needs. Watch for safeties creeping down into the box, which signals run support and makes this a low value call against heavy fronts. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles to see if they are two gapping or firing hard into a single gap, since a hard-charging interior line can blow up the dive before the fullback gets to the line of scrimmage. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a linebacker spot are the biggest threat to this play, so if you see a defender crashing the mesh point immediately at the snap, expect this play to get stuffed. This play struggles against nano blitz packages and gap-exchange stunts up front, but it beats defenses that overcommit to outside run support or slow-flowing zone fronts.
Usage Tips
Use this play in short yardage and goal line situations where you need a tough downhill runner to convert on 1st or 2nd and short. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see light boxes with only 6 or fewer defenders in the box, this play hits fast before linebackers can flow. Hot route the fullback path with your left or right stick if you scout a shaded nose tackle or overloaded front to bounce the run to the weaker side gap. Pair this with FB Dive Weak and HB Lead Dive from the same set to keep defenders guessing on which gap you are attacking, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits. Mix in Mtn HB Lead Dive as a changeup since it looks identical pre-snap but shifts the ball carrier assignment, punishing defenses that key on the fullback every snap.
