TE Corner out of the Tight, Split T formation sends the backside TE (red route) on a deep dig-to-corner breaking route toward the sideline, giving a high, over-the-top window against man coverage. On the play side, the flanker runs a shallow crossing route underneath while the slot receiver clears out on a corner route of his own, and the HB releases into a flat route as a checkdown option. This is a play-action-style man beater with the TE serving as the primary read on his deep corner break, progressing to the flat/checkdown route if the corner is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, since single-high looks open up the TE corner route against man defenders trailing underneath If you see two deep safeties splitting the field, the corner route into that side is much harder to complete, so shift your read to the flanker's shallow crosser or the HB flat route Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits, particularly if the defense is running Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 can squeeze the corner route with a flat defender or cornerback sinking underneath, so be ready to check down quickly Key the flow of the linebackers post-snap, since a blitzing linebacker or nano blitz look means you need to get the ball out fast to the HB flat route rather than holding for the deeper corner break
Usage Tips
Look for single-high safety shells or man coverage indicators pre-snap before committing to the TE corner route as your first read
Hot route the flanker's shallow crosser into a deeper dig or drag if you see a zone shell rolling to that side, since the shallow route can get clogged by underneath linebackers
Use the HB flat release as your safety valve against blitz-heavy fronts, especially on third and short or third and medium
Pair this play with FB Toss or HB Lead earlier in a series to get linebackers flowing downhill, then dial up TE Corner off similar personnel to hit the corner route behind a suckered defense
Best called on second or third and long when you need a defined deep shot but still want a checkdown built in for protection against a heavy pass rush
