FB Toss out of the Tight set Split T formation with 32 personnel is a pure run play designed to get the fullback the ball on the edge quickly. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping laterally to seal the point of attack while the two outside blockers, including the fullback carrier's lead blocker, pull and climb toward the perimeter to kick out the edge defender. The primary read is a bounce or bang decision at the point of attack: the ballcarrier reads the kickout block first, deciding whether to press outside off the pulling blockers or cut inside if the edge is sealed too far upfield.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a hard edge crash from the play side defensive end or outside linebacker, this is the primary key that tells the ballcarrier to cut inside instead of bouncing. Gap exchange stunts and contain blitzes from the edge kill this play before the pullers can get set, so check for defenders looping outside pre-snap. An overhang defender playing outside leverage with depth is the biggest indicator this toss should be bounced wide for a long gain. Fast flowing linebackers who diagnose toss quickly and flow hard to the edge will limit this to a short gain, so have a cutback plan ready. Stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box signal that inside runs like FB Dive should replace this call for the series.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap for outside linebacker depth, if they are crashing hard inside this toss will bounce outside for a big gain.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap read on the play side corner to confirm he is not sitting in the alley expecting run support.
This works best on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are still respecting balanced run and pass looks from Split T personnel.
Pair FB Toss with FB Dive and Mtn HB Toss in the same series so defenders cannot key on pulling linemen without risking a cutback gain up the middle.
Hot route the play side tight end or blocker to a quick chip if you see an overload blitz look, this buys the fullback time to find the crease.
