Mtn HB Toss out of the Tight set, Split T formation is a motion HB toss run designed to attack the perimeter before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the offensive line firing out to seal the interior while the HB motions across the backfield and takes the toss, working outside to the flank with a lead blocker in front. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and it wins by getting the ball to the edge with numbers before defenders can string it out. The primary read is the edge frontside: identify the first threat off the toss (force defender or overhang) and let the blocking flow dictate whether you bounce it outside or cut it up inside the log block.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment to the play side since a rolled up safety or overhang defender is the first man who has to be accounted for on the edge. Watch for linebackers flowing hard with the HB motion, which signals the defense is playing assignment football and will be in good position to fill. Post-snap, key the play side end and outside linebacker leverage: if they stay wide and string the play out, look to cut it up inside the log block rather than forcing the bounce. This run beats slow flowing base fronts and light box looks like 4-3 Under or Nickel with only six in the box, but it gets shut down by aggressive scrape exchange linebackers and defenses that key motion with a fast flowing Mike. Be alert for a user-controlled defender spying the edge or a Sam linebacker sitting outside the tackle, since that defender can blow up the toss before the blocking sets up.
Usage Tips
Use the HB motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety with the flow, which tells you if they are keying run to that side.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and honor balanced run fits.
Pair this with FB Toss and Fk FB Toss Rollout Lt or Fk FB Toss Boot Lt to build a toss action sequence that keeps defenders honest on the edge while setting up boot and rollout play-action off the same look.
If the defense shows a hard edge crash or scrapes a linebacker fast, hot route the fullback or lead blocker to adjust the kickout angle, or bounce outside the read entirely.
Against aggressive nano blitz packages, snap it quickly off the motion to beat backside pursuit before the blitz gets home.
