HB Inside from the Split T Tight formation is a straight downhill run play designed to attack the interior gaps behind the fullback lead blocker. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the fullback filling through the hole ahead of the halfback, who takes a quick handoff and cuts inside off the double team blocking at the point of attack. This is a run play with no route combos or pass options, so the primary read is the halfback identifying the first open crease between the guards based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked linebackers at or near the line of scoreline pre-snap, since this signals the defense is loaded to stop interior runs like HB Inside. Check safety depth before the snap. A single high safety cheating down into the box often means the defense is selling out against inside run action. Post-snap, key on the fullback's block target. If the user-controlled linebacker beats the fullback's initial hit, the play has little chance to break through. Look for defensive tackles crashing hard down the line, which can clog the primary rushing lane and force the halfback to bounce outside prematurely. This play is most vulnerable to gap-shooting defensive tackles and blitzing middle linebackers, so avoid calling it into a defense that shows an overload front on the interior.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a physical, controlled gap to convert third or fourth down.
Check the defensive front pre-snap. If you see a 4-3 or 3-4 with linebackers stacked tight over the center, this play can struggle, so consider audibling to FB Dive Weak instead.
Combine HB Inside with Mtn HB Toss or FB Toss in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense honest, since the toss action forces linebackers to respect outside flow before you come back inside.
Take manual control of the fullback lead blocker at the snap to manually seal the first threat in the hole, especially against defenders who shoot gaps aggressively.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages unless you have a hot route or check adjustment ready, since extra defenders in the box can beat the double team before the halfback clears the line.
