The blocking scheme sells the fullback toss action to the strong side while the offensive line and QB flow away from it, forcing linebackers and edge defenders to respect the run before reacting to the pass. Primary read progression starts with the flat or short crossing route on the boot side, then works to the intermediate route breaking behind it, with the QB using run support as an outlet if the pocket collapses.
Defensive Reads
Look for linebackers stepping up hard on the mesh point before the fake, which signals they are keying the fullback and vacating throwing lanes on the boot side. Check the strong safety and outside linebacker leverage on the play side edge, since a widened alignment means the defense may already be spying the boot lane. Man coverage shells with tight press corners are vulnerable if the flat defender bites on run action, opening the shallow route for an easy pitch and catch. Zone coverage, especially Cover 3 with a hard-flowing curl to flat defender, can be a problem if that defender stays disciplined and sits underneath the crossing route. Watch for a contained edge rusher or scrape exchange linebacker who does not respect the fake, since that defender can blow up the boot before the QB gets outside the pocket.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where defenses are primed to bite on run action based on your FB Toss and FB Dive tendencies. Sequence it after you have already shown FB Toss and Mtn HB Toss a few times so linebackers and safeties key run flow and step up before the boot pulls them out of the play. Check pre-snap for run blitz alignment such as stacked box safeties or linebackers creeping downhill, since that is when the play-action fake hits hardest. Hot route the flat route to a deeper option if you see a corner sitting low in a zone shell, and be ready to tuck and run with the QB if the edge defender crashes down on the fake instead of setting the boot edge.
