Mtn Flat Y Seam is a motion-based play-action pass out of the bunch alignment that sends the Y (tight end) on a seam route up the middle of the field while a back or receiver works the flat underneath for a quick outlet. The motion adjusts the bunch look pre-snap to help identify man versus zone coverage before the ball is even snapped, and the seam route is designed to split the difference between hook zone defenders and deep safeties. Primary progression starts with the seam route against single high or middle of field open shells, then works down to the flat as the checkdown against tighter coverage or when the seam window closes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to match the bunch motion, this tells you whether you are facing man or zone principles. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the seam side signals a robber or match zone concept designed to take away this exact throw. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker or Mike for a delayed drop into the seam lane, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he is playing a lurk technique that can undercut the throw. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating down and disciplined hook defenders, since the seam window gets squeezed and the flat has extra underneath help. It is highly effective against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks with man coverage on the tight end, since the seam route wins vertical leverage quickly before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and safeties into showing their hand, if the defender assigned to the motion man follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and you should trust the seam route against the vacated middle. Against zone shells with two deep safeties, throw the seam with anticipation before the hook defender can sink underneath it, this play punishes defenses that play soft zone drops. This is an ideal call on second and medium or third and short to medium since the flat route gives a safe checkdown while the seam threatens a bigger gain over the middle. Pair this play with Flat Y Leak or Mtn Flat Y Leak in your play-calling sequence so the defense sees similar motion and formation but has to respect a leak route wrinkle, keeping linebackers honest. If the defense starts jumping the seam route after seeing it once, sequence into PA Post Dig or Verticals from the same formation to attack over the top of aggressive underneath defenders.
