Breakdown

Zone Fake Jet Wk is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty that sells jet motion and outside zone action before releasing the backfield ball carrier on a wheel route out of the backfield. The diagram shows the motion man clearing across the formation while the offensive line executes zone blocking steps to sell run, and the lone isolated receiver on the closed side runs a deep vertical stem up the sideline as a clear-out. The primary read is the wheel route breaking out of the backfield underneath the vertical stretch, with the deep route occupying the middle safety before you progress to the wheel.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap: if they bite hard on the zone run action and jet motion, the wheel route out of the backfield will have a clean lane against man or zone. Key the flat defender or overhang corner on the wheel side, since a disciplined defender who stays home on the running back can undercut the wheel before it develops. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, because a single high safety rotating late to the deep vertical route can help bracket the sideline receiver and force the check down. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender lurking underneath the wheel route or spying the backfield, which is the biggest threat to this concept since it erases the natural coverage void created by the run fake. Beware of aggressive edge blitzes off the jet motion side, since a defender crashing hard off the snap can disrupt the play-action timing before the wheel route has a chance to develop.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run-heavy sequences so the jet motion and zone steps hold linebackers and safeties, setting up the play-action fake to actually freeze the defense.

Check safety depth before the snap: if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10 plus yards, the wheel route out of the backfield has room to work against man coverage or a blitz look.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or man coverage with no flat defender flowing outside, hot route the vertical receiver into a deep comeback or hitch to give yourself a quicker outlet against a hard corner.

Pair this call with HB Zone Wk or Wide Zone Wk earlier in a series so the defense keys run action off the jet motion, then hit them with this shot play once they start crashing linebackers downhill.

Avoid calling this on third and long or against defenses that consistently sim pressure off jet motion, since the play needs the run fake to actually manipulate second level defenders.
