Breakdown

PA Boot Corner Post is a play-action bootleg concept out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty that pulls the quarterback to the boot side while the bunch releases into a corner-post combo. The backside X runs a deep post, the bunch nearest the boot pushes a receiver vertically up the seam into a corner route, and an underneath crosser plus a flat route from the running back give the quarterback a full flat-to-deep progression as he rolls out. This is a man beater built to attack the boundary corner and safety with a high-low stretch, with the primary read starting on the corner route breaking outside, then working back to the deep post and down to the underneath crosser and flat route as checkdowns.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two-high shells versus single high safety looks, since a two-high shell forces you to rely on the corner route beating the flat defender rather than a post shot behind a rotated safety. Watch cornerback depth at the line: soft press corners invite the post throw, while off-man corners make the corner route the higher percentage read. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any user-controlled linebacker dropping into the boot lane, since a fast flat drop can undercut the underneath crosser and force you to climb the pocket. Look for safety rotation the instant the play fake happens, if the safety bites hard on run action the post route will be wide open behind him. This concept struggles against disciplined zone drops with a deep half safety staying home, so have PA Post Curl Shot or Verticals ready as a counter if defenses sit on the boot side flat and corner.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are still respecting play action and inside zone looks from this personnel group. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see a single high safety rotating toward the boot side, throw the post immediately behind him. If corners are pressed in man coverage, trust the corner route to win at the boundary since the bunch alignment creates natural rub potential. Pair this with PA Post Dig and PA Boot Slide in the same drive to keep linebackers honest on the play fake while stressing different levels of the field. Use the boot action to buy time against edge pressure and get outside the pocket, then work your eyes from corner to post to crosser in rhythm. Sprinkle in Cheat HB Slash or HB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run fake and slow down linebacker flow before calling this shot play.
