Breakdown

Counter Y out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty is a power run play designed to hit off tackle to the weak side with a counter blocking scheme. The diagram shows the bunch receivers stacked to the strong side with the offensive line pulling and the HB taking a counter step before pressing the hole, with a lead blocker (Y) leading through the gap. This is a pure run play with no route concept to beat coverage, so the primary read is the pulling guard or fullback lead block to determine whether to bend the run inside off the double team or bounce it outside off the edge block.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box pre-snap with linebackers crashing downhill on the counter step, that is the biggest killer of this run since it removes the numbers advantage. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under front or overload blitz to the play side, both alignments can blow up the pulling linemen before they reach their landmarks. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line on the counter action they can string the run out before the lead blocker arrives. User-controlled defenders flowing to the ball late are the biggest threat, so if the CPU or human defender reads counter quickly, expect the play to get gang tackled near the line. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses with disciplined linebackers who stay home instead of flowing with the initial counter step.

Usage Tips

Run this play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the counter scheme needs numbers advantage to spring the HB. Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot from this same formation instead. Use manual control on your lead blocker after the snap to seal the edge defender and create a cleaner running lane for the HB. Mix this in on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) after establishing HB Dive or Inside Zone Split from the same set so linebackers start flowing hard, then hit Counter Y to punish that aggressive flow. Pair this with PA Counter later in a series once defenders start keying the counter step to keep them honest.
