Breakdown

Mtn Flat Y Leak is a play-action leak concept out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty that uses pre-snap motion to shift the bunch look and disguise the Y leak route sneaking out the backside after selling the play fake. The offensive line executes a run blocking scheme to hold the linebackers, while the Y (tight end) leaks through the flat area vacated by the fake, creating a wide open zone beater against teams that bite on the run fake. The primary read progression starts with the flat route from the motion man as the quick first read, then works to the leaking Y as the delayed second read once the pocket sets and the defense commits to the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the Y leak will have a wide throwing lane in the vacated intermediate zone. Key the safety rotation post-snap, single high shells with aggressive run support are the most vulnerable to the leak concept since the middle of the field opens up. Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenses that ask linebackers to fill run gaps get exposed the hardest, while disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells that keep linebackers in coverage drops can shut down the leak route. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot near the leak route, a smart user rushing to that window can jump the throw if the quarterback holds it too long. Identify man coverage on the motion defender pre-snap, if he follows across the formation, the flat route becomes the quicker answer and the leak becomes the home run shot behind it.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a strong indicator of man coverage and can key on the flat route winning immediately.

Sell the play fake with the correct ball fake timing since linebackers biting on the run action are what spring the Y leak wide open in the intermediate zone.

This play works best on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to respect run action and step up into run fits.

Pair this with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense keys run action, then hit them with Mtn Flat Y Leak once linebackers start creeping up on run tendencies.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, hot route the flat route to a quick out or slant to give the quarterback an immediate answer against pressure.
