Spacing out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty spreads five underneath stems across the field at staggered depths to stress zone defenders horizontally. From the bunch, one receiver runs a quick out to the boundary, the middle stack member sits down on a hitch at roughly five yards, another works a shallow drag underneath, and the backside X releases vertically before settling into a curl. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built on horizontal spacing rather than route combos designed to beat man leverage, and the primary read progression starts with the flat out route, moves inside to the hitch sitting in the throwing lane, and finishes with the backside curl if the underneath zone widens out.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too deep into their zone drops the hitch and drag routes will have soft grass underneath for an easy completion. Identify the underneath zone defender assigned to the hook or curl area, a user controlled linebacker sitting in that throwing lane can jump the hitch route and create a turnover if the quarterback does not see him. Check corner alignment before the snap, press man coverage on the outside receivers can disrupt the timing of the out and curl routes and force the quarterback into a rushed read. Recognize blitz packages immediately, since Spacing only sends five into routes, a six or seven man pressure with no spy leaves the quarterback without time to work through the full progression. Look for Cover 3 buzz rotations where the safety drops late into the middle third, this can close the window on the backside curl and force the ball to come out earlier than the offense wants.
Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see two high safeties or a deep middle third defender sitting still, this concept is money against those zone drops.
Work the play from outside in, hit the flat route first if the corner sinks with the vertical stem, then move to the sitting hitch which is the true void beater versus Cover 3.
Use this on early down and medium distance situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz, since Spacing loses value against pressure with only five in the pattern.
Pair this play in sequence with PA Boot or PA Boot Slide from the same set so the defense has to respect the play-action look off similar formation motion, keeping linebackers honest and slower to jump the underneath windows.
Hot route the backside curl into a deeper dig if you diagnose Cover 4 pre-snap, since the natural sit at the curl depth can be shallow enough for safeties to close on it in quarters shells.
