HB Zone Wk is a weak side inside zone run out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty with 11 personnel. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme flowing to the weak side while the bunch receiver set to the strong side simply releases upfield to occupy defenders and hold the alley. The HB reads the zone flow from the backside, presses the line of scrimmage, and picks his lane based on the first true defender in the box.
Pre-snap, identify the weak side linebacker depth and alignment since a downhill fill defender will shut down the cutback lane immediately. Watch for a shaded weak side defensive tackle or nose since a one gap penetrating scheme disrupts the zone blocking before the HB can read his hole. If the defense shows a walked up safety to the weak side, expect an extra run fit that eliminates the bounce outside option. User controlled linebackers who key the backfield mesh point early will beat this play by flowing hard and filling the cutback lane before the HB can plant. This run struggles against odd fronts with a true zero technique nose since the interior zone blocking loses its double team advantage.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this away from extra defenders stacked to the play side. Use this against base fronts and light boxes where the weak side linebacker is not overhang aligned, since it exposes the backside cutback lane. Pair this with HB Dive and Wide Zone Wk in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction while showing identical backfield action. Motion is not needed here, but use a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early and widen your cutback window. On short yardage or 2nd and short, this is a strong call since the zone blocking creates natural double teams that seal lanes for a positive gain. Avoid this against stacked fronts with extra run support since the zone blocking scheme cannot generate enough movement against numbers advantage.
