HB Stretch out of Singleback Y Trips Close is an outside zone run that flows the offensive line laterally to the play side, asking the HB to press the edge before making a one cut upfield off the block from the play side tackle and TE. This is a pure run play, not a pass concept, so there is no man beater or zone beater route logic to worry about, but the trips bunch to one side does pull an extra defender out of the box on paper. The primary read progression is the backside cutback lane first, then the play side alley if the edge defender gets reached and sealed, and finally the bounce outside if the corner overplays the box.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and reading run fits aggressively they will win the cutback lane before the OL can seal it. Identify whether the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, odd fronts with a nose tackle head up on the center make the backside cutback much harder to hit. Key the play side defensive end or OLB, if he crashes hard inside on the snap that opens the bounce lane outside for a home run cut. Look for a user-controlled defender flowing hard to the play side, that lurk threat is why the backside cutback read exists as the first option in the progression. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with safeties positioned deep tend to leave light boxes that HB Stretch exploits, while Cover 4 or run blitz packages with an extra defender crashing the edge shut this play down quickly.
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Stretch into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the trips look should be pulling a safety or corner out wide.
Use the right stick to manually press the play side hole first, then read the reach block on the edge defender before deciding whether to cut back inside or bounce it outside.
This play pairs extremely well with HB Dive and HB Pump Draw from the same set since all three sell inside zone action and force linebackers to freeze on run fits.
Save it for early down calls, first and second and short to medium, where defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of stacking the box with extra DBs.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap with linebackers crashing downhill, hot route the HB to a quick cutback angle or check into HB Dive to punish the overpursuit.
