Jet PA Sprint Y Leak is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Y Trips Close that uses jet motion to freeze the second level before the QB sprints out to the boundary. The Y (tight end) leaks across the formation into the flat or intermediate area away from the run flow, giving the quarterback a designed leak route to hit if defenders bite on the jet sweep fake and run flow. This is primarily a play-action shot play designed to beat aggressive run defense and man coverage that loses discipline chasing the jet motion, with the primary read progression starting on the leaking Y in the flat, then working to the sprint-out flood routes on that side of the field, and finally checking down or tucking the ball to run if the pocket collapses.
Identify the safety shell before the snap. Two high safeties suggest zone coverage that may leave the flat open for the Y leak, while single high alignment signals man coverage or Cover 3 that requires attacking the deep half away from the rollout. Key the linebackers at the snap. If they flow hard toward the jet motion or crash down expecting the run, the leak route to the Y will be wide open in the vacated area. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the quarterback on the rollout side, since a disciplined spy or lurk defender can jump the leak route or force a premature throw. This play struggles against zone blitzes that bring pressure from the sprint-out side, since the extra rusher can beat the boot protection and collapse the pocket before routes develop. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined corners sitting on curl and flat zones can take away both the leak route and the shorter flood concepts, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and scramble.
Use this play on early downs, especially first or second and short to medium, when the defense is likely to key run based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap. If the linebackers are sitting shallow or crashing down on run fits, the jet fake will pull them out of position and open the Y leak immediately.
Hot route the backside receiver into a deep dig or post if you see single high safety looks, since the sprint action naturally holds that safety and opens up explosive plays on the far side.
Sequence this play after running HB Dive or Jet Wide Zone earlier in the game to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit them with the play-action shot when they overplay the fake.
Roll the pocket with purpose and get your eyes downfield quickly since sprint-out concepts live and die on timing, so if the Y leak is covered move through your progression fast rather than holding the ball.
