PA Switch WR In is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Y Trips Close that uses a switch release concept from the trips side to confuse man defenders while the backside receiver runs an in route to attack the middle of the field. The play-action fake from under center holds the linebackers for a beat, opening throwing lanes for both the switch concept and the shallow crosser. This is primarily a man beater given the switch release, though the in route also gives you a answer against zone drops if the underneath defenders bite on the run fake. The primary read starts with the switch release on the trips side for a potential explosive gain, then works back to the in route as the check down against zone coverage or if the switch is blanketed.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play fake the switch release and in route will both have room to work behind them Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high alignment often means man coverage on the outside which favors the switch release winning downfield Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the in route, that is the biggest threat to this concept and usually signals a zone drop underneath Man press coverage on the trips receivers can be exploited by the switch release natural rub, but disciplined man defenders who play through the rub will take away the explosive shot Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge, since the play action fake takes extra time to develop, an overload blitz with a spy or extra rusher can collapse the pocket before either route develops
Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel situations where the play action fake will actually influence the linebackers and safeties
Check the box count pre snap, if you see six or more in the box that is a strong indicator of run support bite which sets up the switch release for a big play
Motion or shifts on the trips side can help you diagnose man versus zone before the snap, if the defense follows your receivers across the formation it is likely man coverage
Hot route the backside in route into a deeper dig or drag against soft zone shells if you are getting good time in the pocket
