Breakdown

HB Dive out of Singleback Y Trips Close is a downhill interior run that hands the ball off straight through the A or B gap based on the defensive front. The offensive line blocks a standard man/gap scheme up front, with the center and guards working double teams on the nose and combo blocks up to the second level linebackers. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read is the fullback or lead blocker's path into the hole, letting the play develop before deciding whether to stick with the called gap or bounce off the initial hole based on flow from the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 with linebackers stacked tight, since heavy fronts with extra defenders in the box will clog the interior gaps. Watch for a Mike linebacker blitzing downhill through the A gap pre-snap, this nano blitz look can blow up HB Dive before the back gets to the hole. Check safety depth, a single high safety often signals man coverage on the perimeter and a lighter box, which favors this run, while two deep safeties can still leave room if linebackers are passive. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and whether they are shooting gaps aggressively or reading and reacting, penetrating fronts force the back to cut earlier than the blocking scheme intends. This play struggles against goal line or heavy run-stopping fronts with an extra defensive lineman, and it gets stuffed when user defenders spy the fullback's lead block and flow directly to the ball.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest against your trips formation pass tendencies.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a bubble screen or Curls X-Choice instead.

Hit the hole fast and trust your blocks, this is not a play to dance around, one cut and get vertical through the A gap.

Pair HB Dive with WR Screen and Jet PA Wide Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between inside run, perimeter run, and jet motion misdirection.

Against aggressive user blitzers who crash downhill, use momentum to set up HB Pump Draw later in the drive since the defense will be primed to bite on the same look.
