Breakdown

Mtn PA Boot Rt is a play-action boot concept out of Singleback Y Trips Close that shows run action to the mountain motion side before the QB rolls out to the right edge. The trips side runs a clear out and a comeback or curl combo to occupy zone defenders while the backside tight end or fullback releases into the flat as the boot outlet, giving this play both man and zone beating properties depending on the flat defender's assignment. The primary read progression starts with the deep out or comeback route on the boot side, works down to the flat route underneath, and if both are covered the QB should be ready to tuck and run since the roll action naturally creates an edge running lane.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, if a cornerback sinks into the flat while a safety rotates over the top you are likely facing zone coverage and should look to the deep comeback or out route on the boot side Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who crash on the run fake open up the flat and intermediate window behind them Watch for a user controlled defender spying the QB roll, this is the biggest threat to the play since a spy can undercut both the flat route and the scramble lane Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells presnap since the deep comeback route sits in the natural void behind the corner and in front of the deep safety in those shells Man coverage with no flat defender help is where this play struggles most, since the boot route runs directly into a trailing defender with no natural separation unless the receiver wins the release

Usage Tips

Run this from under center or shotgun on early downs like first or second and short to mid yardage since the run fake actually holds linebackers and forces them to respect the mountain motion action

Check the flat defender before the snap, if it is a linebacker with poor coverage instincts this becomes an easy pitch and catch on the boot flat route

Use the play on a slight roll to your throwing arm side to maximize the QB's ability to throw on the move and extend the pocket against edge pressure

Pair this with Mtn Jet Slot Choice or Mtn HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive so the defense keys on mountain motion as a run threat, setting up the boot to hit for a big gap in coverage

If the defense sells out on the run fake with linebackers crashing downhill, take off with the QB scramble since the roll clears the edge defender out of the frame

Avoid calling this against aggressive man blitzes that key the mountain motion since the fake buys almost no time before the rush closes the pocket
