Smash out of Singleback Y Trips Close is a classic two level high low concept built to attack corners on the trips side. The outside receiver runs a hitch or corner route while the inside slot receiver clears vertically on a corner route, stacking the boundary and forcing the cornerback to choose between the flat and the deep third. This is a zone beater at its core, punishing Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells since the flat defender cannot cover both levels, and the primary read progression starts with the underneath hitch before working up to the corner route if the corner sinks or the flat defender jumps the short throw.
Identify the flat defender pre-snap, if he is a linebacker with poor speed the corner route over the top will win easily. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat trying to jump the hitch route, if you see this bail out to the corner route sight adjust immediately. Check safety alignment, a single high safety rotating late signals Cover 3 which is vulnerable to the corner route beating the deflated flat coverage. Cover 4 or quarters shells with a hard hitting corner on the outside receiver can shut this concept down, since the corner has help over the top and can sit on the short route. Blitz packages that bring the slot corner on a nano blitz will remove the flat defender entirely, so recognize pre-snap pressure and be ready to check into a hot route or throw the hitch before the blitz arrives.
Check the cornerback depth before the snap, if he is playing off you can hit the hitch immediately for a quick rhythm throw on early downs.
Against Cover 2 look for the deep corner route the moment the flat defender squats on the short route, this is the money throw for a chunk gain.
Use hot routes to convert the backside single receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage, giving you a built in man beater option.

This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the underneath hitch provides a safe conversion while the corner route stays live as an explosive answer against soft zone shells.
