Tight Flex is Shotgun's compressed 11 personnel look: the tight end flexes off the line into a tight slot alignment while the receivers reduce their splits toward the numbers, leaving one true isolated boundary target. Unlike wide-split sets like Shotgun Wing Slot or the spread-out 10 personnel sets, Tight Flex shrinks the field horizontally on purpose. That condensed spacing forces defenders into traffic, which is exactly what makes the Mesh, Mesh Spot, Mtn Mesh Spot, and Double Spot family so lethal here. Cornerbacks playing press man from tight alignments get rubbed off immediately, and zone defenders have overlapping responsibilities in a small area, so hole shots and settle routes come open faster than in wider formations.
The flexed tight end is the whole point. With the TE off the line and inside, you can attack whichever defender is covering him: a linebacker in man gets beaten by Mtn Y Cross, Mtn Stick Z Post, and PA Cross Dig, while a nickel or safety walked down invites you to run at the lightened box with HB Draw, HB Counter, HB Option, and Read Option. The Cheat Bunch variants (Cheat Bunch HB Draw, Cheat Bunch Drive Corner, Cheat Bunch Switch Flood) motion into a bunch look pre-snap, which lets you diagnose man versus zone by watching defender travel, then either snap into the run or attack the bunch side with switch and flood concepts.
Because the field is compressed, the isolated outside receiver plays into massive one-on-one leverage, which is where SLWR and Gadget tags earn their keep. Slot Curl, Bench, Bench Switch, WR Corners, and Quick Looks all give you a quick-game answer against pressure, while Falcon Wheel, Falcon Cross, and PA Post Shot use the same compressed alignment to sell short before ripping the top off a Cover 3 or single high shell. The 3DRB tag means your back can be motioned out and hot routed as a legitimate receiver, so the set functions as both a run set and an empty-ish passing set without a personnel substitution tipping your hand.
Read the defender over your flexed tight end pre-snap: linebacker in man means Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Stick Z Post, nickel walked down into the box means check to HB Draw or Read Option.
On third and medium, live in Stick, Frisco, and Quick Looks, then hot route the isolated outside receiver to a slant or fade depending on whether you see press or bail technique.
Use Cheat Bunch HB Draw as your tempo call after a passing series, because the motion pulls a defender out of the box and the draw hits the vacated lane immediately.
Against heavy blitz users, block your running back and work Slot Curl or Bench Switch, keeping your eyes on the shortest route rather than waiting on the deep read.
Set up PA Post Shot and Falcon Wheel only after you have established HB Counter and HB Option, since the play action hold and wheel release both depend on the linebackers biting downhill.
