Breakdown

Mtn Mesh Spot lines up in Shotgun Tight Flex 11 personnel and shows a mesh combo underneath paired with a spot concept and a deep vertical clear-out. The two inside receivers cross low to create natural rubs against man coverage while a third receiver runs a quick out that settles at the sticks, and the backside X releases vertically up the sideline to hold the deep defender. The outside receiver on the near side runs a corner breaking route over the mesh to attack Cover 3 seams. This is a versatile man beater and zone beater combo play with the primary read progression starting on the mesh crossers underneath, working to the spot out route, and finally the deep corner or streak if a defender bites on the shallow crossers.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage since two deep safeties suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4 which struggles to stop the mesh unless a linebacker carries the crosser. Watch the flat defender on the spot side because a squatting corner or flat zone defender will jump the out route and bait a turnover. Post-snap, identify if the underneath linebackers pass off the mesh crossers cleanly since sloppy man-to-man switches leave a crosser wide open in the middle of the field. If the user drops a lurk defender into the shallow crossing lanes, look immediately to the deep corner route since the underneath window will be taken away. This play struggles against a well-timed Cover 3 sky blitz where the flat defender squats hard, so be ready to check to a hot route or dump off to the running back if the mesh gets clogged.

Usage Tips

Motion the flexed receiver pre-snap to identify man versus zone coverage based on whether a defender travels with him.

Use this play on second or third and medium since the spot route sits right at the sticks for an easy conversion.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell, key the deep corner route since zone defenders tend to squeeze the mesh and vacate that area.

Against man coverage, trust the mesh crossers to create natural picks and take the first open crosser instead of forcing the deep shot.

Pair this play with Mesh or Mtn Y Cross in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the mesh concept, then mix in HB Draw or Read Option to keep the front seven honest.
