Defensive Reads
Key the pulling guard as the ball carrier's blocking indicator, since the HB's cutback decision is tied directly to how that puller reads the edge defender. Watch the play side linebacker depth before the snap: if he is stacked tight to the line he is more likely to get sealed or kicked out on the counter action. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the initial counter step, since disciplined edge players and scrape exchange linebackers who stay home against the counter action will blow this play up. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses with a strong Mike linebacker reading pulling linemen, and it can get stuffed by an aggressive 3-4 front that keeps outside contain and forces the cutback into pursuit. Blitzes off the edge from the counter side can beat this play before the double team develops, so respect overload pressure looks from the defense's field side.
Usage Tips
Run this against defenses showing base fronts or light boxes with six or fewer defenders since the misdirection loses value against stacked run fronts. Watch linebacker flow pre-snap: if the Mike and Will are shaded hard to the field or crashing on flow keys, counter action will freeze them just long enough for the pulling guard to seal the edge. Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up play-action shots later in the drive. Pair HB Counter with PA Post Shot or PA Cross Dig from the same Tight Flex set so the defense has to respect both the counter run action and the deep shot off identical formation and personnel. Motion the TE or use a quick pre-snap shift to check the defensive front and confirm whether the counter side has a numbers advantage before the snap.
