Stick out of Shotgun Tight Flex shows a three level stretch with both outside receivers running deep outs to the sideline while the TE and slot receiver settle into stick routes over the middle, one working left and one working right at a shallow depth. This is a classic zone beater that attacks the flats and hi lo reads underneath zone defenders, though it also holds up against man coverage thanks to the natural pick potential from the tight alignment. The primary read progression starts with the near side stick route, then works to the corner or out route breaking to the sideline, and finally checks down to the opposite stick if the defense rotates coverage away.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the stick routes the sideline outs will be wide open for a big gain. Key the flat defender's first two steps, a defender who widens with the outside route leaves the stick concept uncovered underneath. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the outs is the biggest threat to this play, so be ready to check down to the near stick immediately. User controlled linebackers sitting in a lurk position over the stick routes can bait the quarterback into a costly interception, so scan the middle of the field before committing to that throw. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed by the natural rub from the tight end and slot alignment, look for the receiver to gain a step working across the field.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells since the flat defenders have to choose between the stick route and the deep out breaking to the sideline.
Use pre-snap motion or a hot route to convert one stick into a flat route if you diagnose man coverage, giving you a natural rub off the formation width.
This play is money on third and short to third and medium because the stick route sits right at the sticks and the quarterback can get the ball out fast against a blitz look.
Pair Stick with HB Draw or Read Option from the same set so defenders start cheating up on the stick concept, then punish them with the run game.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the deep out to the sideline since the stick routes will likely be squeezed by underneath zone defenders sitting in the throwing lanes.
