Overview
Empty Strong Slots takes the Shotgun formation and removes the back from the backfield entirely, spreading five eligible receivers across the field with a strong side double slot alignment. Instead of the balanced 2x2 or trips looks you get from other empty sets, this one stacks two slot bodies to the strong side while isolating the backside receivers, which forces the defense to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. You are working out of 11 personnel, so your tight end is one of the interior bodies rather than an attached blocker, and your back is displaced to a slot or wide alignment where a linebacker in man coverage becomes an immediate mismatch.
The pre-snap read here is cleaner than almost any other set in Shotgun. With no back to account for, the defense cannot disguise a spinning safety or a dropping edge player without leaving a slot uncovered, and any man coverage look tells you exactly where your 3DRB tag receiver is being carried. If a linebacker walks out over the back, you attack immediately with option routes or the slot screen. If the defense counters by playing base zone, the strong side slot stack gives you natural pick and rub action against flat and curl defenders who have to work through traffic.

Strengths
- The double slot alignment to the strong side creates natural rub and pick action, so curl and flat defenders in Cover 3 and Cover 2 get stuck in traffic and the inside slot comes free on Corner Pivot In and Out Cross.
- Removing the back from the backfield forces the defense to cover five receivers with no help, which exposes man coverage instantly and lets you isolate your 3DRB tag back against a linebacker on Shock Slot Option and Option Stick Nod.
- Hoss Juke and Verticals Under give you a built in high low answer against single high, with the seam route stressing the middle third and the underneath option settling in the vacated hook window.
- QB Draw and Jailbreak Slot Screen punish defenses that empty the box or drop eight, so opponents cannot sit in a shell without giving up chunk yardage on the ground or in space.
- Pre-snap diagnosis is elite here, since motioning the outside receiver or the slot immediately reveals man versus zone with no backfield action to muddy the picture.
Weaknesses
- No back in the backfield means zero help in protection, so five man pressure and interior nano blitz looks get home before your progression develops, especially against overload fronts to the strong side.
- User-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field can rob the seam and option routes on Ohio Ernie and Verticals Under, since those concepts funnel receivers into the same hook and hole windows.
- The condensed slot alignment can get jammed by press man with inside leverage, which kills the timing on the stick nod and pivot releases before they ever break.
- Losing your run game outside of QB Draw makes this a tendency heavy set, and experienced opponents will play soft coverage with a spy on any obvious empty passing situation.
- Backside isolated receivers see constant bracket looks in Cover 2 Man and 2 Man Under, which shrinks your one on one window if your SLWR tag receiver does not have the speed and release traits to win quickly.
Usage Tips
Check the box before the snap: if the defense leaves fewer than five in the box or clearly drops eight, kill to QB Draw and take the free yardage instead of forcing a throw.
Motion the strong side outside receiver across the formation to confirm coverage, then let the tag tell you whether to work the option concepts (man) or the pivot and cross concepts (zone).
Hot route the isolated backside receiver to a slant or fade depending on leverage, and use that as your quick answer against pressure when you do not have time to work the strong side combos.
On third and medium, Option Stick Nod and Shock Slot Option are your money calls against man, since the option routes break away from whatever leverage the defender shows.
Use Jailbreak Slot Screen after you have hit vertical concepts a few times, because the aggressive edge and flat players who start crashing your dropback are exactly the defenders the screen blocks out of the play.
Slide protect toward the strong side double slot if you are seeing overload pressure, and be ready to escape with the quarterback since there is no back to pick up a free rusher.
