Breakdown

Corner Pivot In lines up from Shotgun Empty Strong Slots with five receivers spread wide, giving the quarterback a clean pre-snap read of the coverage shell. The outside receiver from the slot runs a corner route as the primary vertical stretch, the boundary receiver on the far side sprints a straight vertical, and the two remaining receivers to the trips side execute a pivot in/drag combo that works underneath from sideline to sideline. This is a man beater built around the pivot route creating natural separation against man leverage, with the corner route occupying the deep third and the drag giving the QB a quick outlet against blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, which signals man coverage underneath and opens up the pivot in route against off man or press. If you see two deep safeties splitting the field, the corner route will be contested so look to the drag and vertical combo instead. Key on the slot cornerback's leverage at the snap; outside leverage means the pivot route wins inside, inside leverage means the corner route has room to work outside. User linebackers sitting in a hook zone can jump the drag route, so read their eyes and hips before committing to that throw. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure to the trips side, which forces a quick decision between the drag as a hot route outlet or a rollout escape if the protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Attack this play on early downs or third and medium when the defense is likely to show single high or man coverage. Presnap, identify if the slot corner is playing outside leverage; if so the pivot in route will break open immediately against man coverage. Use motion or a hot route on the drag to convert it into a shallow cross if you see zone defenders sitting underneath. If the safety rotates hard to the corner route side pre-snap, check down to the drag or vertical on the backside for a quicker throw. Pair this play with Verticals Under earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on shorter routes, then hit the corner route for an explosive gain once linebackers and safeties start cheating up. Use Jailbreak Slot Screen as a change-up if the defense starts jumping the pivot and drag combo.
