Flex Y Off is the 11 personnel Shotgun set that pulls the tight end off the line and flexes him into the slot or a wing alignment, giving you a 2x2 look with a detached Y instead of the attached in-line blocker you get from sets like Shotgun Tight or Shotgun Y Off Close. The back sits offset next to the quarterback, which keeps both Inside Zone and Counter Y in play while still letting you release the Y cleanly into the second level. Because the tight end is off the ball, he does not get chipped or re-routed at the line by a defensive end, so seam and dig routes out of this set hit their stems on time.
The alignment matters most for matchup hunting. A flexed Y forces the defense to declare: if they leave a linebacker or big safety over your tight end, X Dagger and PA Seam Digs punish that in the middle of the field. If they walk a nickel corner out to him, you have a light box for Inside Zone Split, Read Option, and 0 1 Trap, plus the RPO Alert HB Zone and RPO HB Zone Alert concepts that let you read the box count and throw off the run action. That two-way stress is the entire point of the set.
Play art here is unusually complete for a single set. You get true five-man protection concepts (Four Verticals, Flood, Curl Ohio, Double Slants), a full screen game (PA Jailbreak Screen, HB Slip Screen, HB Circle), a gap and zone run tree (Counter Y, Mtn Counter, HB Draw, Inside Zone, Inside Zone Split), and play-action off the same run shells (Mtn PA Slide, PA Mtn Slide, PA Seam Digs). The 3DRB and Gadget tags mean you can slot a pass-catching back or a gadget athlete at the Y or in the backfield and get mismatch snaps without subbing personnel and tipping your hand.
Read the defender over your flexed Y before the snap. Linebacker or box safety means go to X Dagger or PA Seam Digs. Nickel or corner walked out means you have a light box for Inside Zone Split, Read Option, or the RPO HB Zone Alert read.
On third and medium, run Double Slants and hot route the tight end to a drag underneath. The rub beats press man and gives you an easy completion against Cover 1 without holding the ball.
Against consistent inside pressure, alternate PA Jailbreak Screen and HB Slip Screen out of the same shell as your Inside Zone calls. Once they respect the screen, Four Verticals and Flood open up on the same look.
Use motion sparingly here. Motioning the flexed Y across the formation is your fastest man or zone identifier, and it also creates a leverage advantage on Flood and Curl Ohio without changing the play call.
Set up X Dagger with two or three Inside Zone or HB Draw carries first. Once the linebackers start pressing the line of scrimmage, the dig window behind the hook defenders becomes an automatic first down.
In four minute situations, lean on 0 1 Trap and Mtn Counter. They keep the clock moving and let you stay in the same set you throw from, which forces the defense to stay base.
