RPO HB Zone Alert is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Flex Y Off that pairs an inside zone run scheme with a quick pass alert built in for the quarterback. The offensive line blocks inside zone while the quarterback reads a designated second level defender, typically the play side linebacker, to decide whether to hand off or pull and throw the alert route. This is a zone beater at its core since the QB is diagnosing run fits and flowing linebackers, and the primary read progression is: identify the alert defender's reaction to the run action, then either give the ball to the HB on zone or throw off it if that defender crashes down.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker at the snap since his reaction to the zone action determines whether the QB hands off or pulls to throw Man coverage on the alert receiver with no immediate underneath help is a green light to throw since the RPO route is designed to win quickly against man beaters Two high safety shells with light boxes tend to funnel this into a run situation since the numbers favor inside zone Aggressive user blitzers flying downhill at the snap can be exploited by the pass option, but a disciplined defender staying square in his run fit responsibility takes away both options Watch for defenders sitting in shallow zone drops or spying the alert route since a lurking linebacker in the throwing lane can jump the quick route and turn it into a turnover
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap to make sure you have numbers for inside zone, if the defense is stacked in the box lean toward throwing off the RPO instead of forcing the run
Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, single high often means an extra run defender in the box which should push your decision toward the pass option
Use your hot route menu to check the alert receiver's depth or motion an extra blocker if you need help versus edge pressure, but avoid over-adjusting since it can tip your intentions
This play works best on early downs like first and second and short when defenses are still respecting balanced play calling
Pair this with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set to keep defenders honest, then mix in PA Mtn Slide or Mtn PA Slide off similar formation looks to punish linebackers who start jumping the run fit
