Inside Zone Split is a shotgun run play out of the Flex Y Off set that uses a zone blocking scheme with the offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side while the RB reads the leverage of the defensive line. The diagram shows the entire blocking unit flowing laterally as one piece with the running back path cutting downhill through the interior gaps, indicating this is a pure zone run rather than any kind of dropback, screen, or RPO look. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team or combo block up front, then bends to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gap is clogged by a stacked defender.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked backers over the guards clog the frontside cutback and force the RB to bend it back weak. Identify safety rotation, a single high safety cheating downhill is the biggest indicator of a run blitz or extra box defender. Post snap, key the playside defensive end and 3 technique, if they get skinny and squeeze the zone flow you need the cutback lane immediately. Look for user controlled linebackers flowing hard to the mesh point, a disciplined user defender crashing the A gap kills this run before it develops. Nickel and dime packages with light boxes are where this play hits hardest, avoid calling it into heavy fronts or when the defense shows a 4-3 under look with extra run support.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box. Use the RB circle or HB draw from this same set as a changeup if the defense starts keying run flow off your zone steps. Motion the TE presnap if available to get a hard count on the defense and confirm whether you are facing man or zone leverage on the edge. Pair this call with RPO HB Zone Alert on early downs so the defense has to respect both the give and the pass option off the same look. Best used on first and second down when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots like PA Seam Digs later in the drive.
