Breakdown
Four Verticals out of Shotgun Flex Y Off sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with both outside receivers running straight seams up the sideline, the slot receiver pushing a quick vertical seam, and the tight end releasing up the middle of the field before bending toward the numbers. The HB stays in to protect on the blue route shown, giving the quarterback a clean five-man protection look while four verticals stretch the field horizontally and vertically. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack deep zone drops and overload single-high or two-high shells, with the primary read progressing from the deep middle seam (the TE/inside vertical working the void between safeties) to the outside verts if the safety commits.
Defensive Reads
Identify single-high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 3 leaves the deep middle vulnerable to the inside vertical route with only one deep defender covering three verticals. Watch for two-high safeties rotating late into a Cover 1 or Cover 3 disguise, which can bait the quarterback into throwing a seam route right into a robber or lurk defender sitting underneath. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who do not get depth on their zone drops will get run through by the seam routes for an explosive gain. Man coverage with no safety help over the top of the outside verticals is the biggest vulnerability, so user the deep safety to double the top read and trust your corners in man press to survive it. A well-timed A-gap or interior blitz can beat this play because it only has five in protection with the HB staying in, so if the offense sees five or six defenders on the line pre-snap, expect immediate pressure on the quarterback before routes develop.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for two-high shells with soft corners since that tells you the seams will sit down in the honey hole between the safeties and corners.
Against Cover 3, target the deep middle seam route immediately since the free safety has to choose which vertical threat to help on, leaving one route uncovered.
Use the HB as a checkdown or hot route him into a flat route if you diagnose a blitz, since he is your only extra protector and adding a fifth blocker isn't an option once he releases.
Pair this play with Curl Ohio or PA Seam Digs in the same set to keep defenses guessing between shallow zone-clearing routes and vertical shots, forcing linebackers to respect both levels.
Best called on obvious passing downs or as a shot play after establishing HB Draw or Inside Zone, since defenses will sell out on the run and open up the deep seams.
