0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Flex Y Off is a gap scheme power run play that pulls a lineman across the formation to trap block the first defender inside the tackle box, letting the offensive line create a natural crease for the HB to press downhill. The diagram shows a standard 11 personnel look with two receivers stacked outside on each side and the TE tight to the formation, with no route concept run since this is a designated handoff to the back lined up next to the QB. The primary read is the HB reading the trap block up front: press the mesh point hard, read the down block on the trap defender, then bounce or cut off the puller's block based on how the second level linebacker flows.
Watch the interior defensive line alignment pre-snap since 0 1 Trap exploits a shaded nose tackle or 3 technique who gets caught flowing upfield instead of holding the gap. Key the middle linebacker's depth and gap responsibility, if he is stacked tight to the line and reads run keys quickly he can blow up the trap block before the puller connects. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses and A gap blitzes since the trap puller can be beaten to the spot by a fast-flowing linebacker or a defensive tackle two gapping. It hits well against zone blitz packages and defenses that slant their line away from the play call. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the A or B gap presnap, since a smart defender sitting on the trap can blow the play up for a loss before the back reaches the line of scrimmage.
Run this out of shotgun to disguise it as a passing formation and freeze aggressive linebackers who bite on play action fakes elsewhere in this set. Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when defenses are sitting in base fronts expecting balance between run and pass. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense shows six or more in the box, consider audibling to Four Verticals or X Dagger to punish the loaded front. Pair 0 1 Trap with PA Mtn Slide or Mtn PA Slide later in the drive since both plays start with similar backfield action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run reads. Use manual ball carrier vision (L2 or LT) to patiently let the trap block develop instead of forcing the run before the puller arrives.
