Counter Y out of Shotgun Flex Y Off is a Power Run scheme that pulls the backside guard and TE across the formation to lead the HB through the hole on the opposite side of the initial flow. The diagram shows a tight bunched line with the fullback/lead blocker and HB stacked in the backfield, with three receivers split out wide who are not involved in the blocking scheme and simply run off coverage vertically. This is a run-only concept: there is no pass option, so the primary read progression is your pulling blockers first, then the playside gap the counter action opens up, then a bounce read to the edge if the interior is clogged.
Watch linebacker depth and width pre-snap: stacked, tight linebackers who crash hard to the initial flow side are the primary target for the misdirection cutback. Identify one-gap or Bear fronts where the defensive line is spread thin across the formation, since a light box on the backside is where counter hits hardest. Beware of defenses that stay disciplined and stay home in their gaps against jet or counter action, as those fronts limit the natural cutback lane. Key on the play-side defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down the line, since a squeezed end forces the HB to bounce outside where extra defenders can rally. Look for stacked box fronts with eight or more defenders, since that numbers disadvantage shuts down counter runs before the pullers even get to their landmarks.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are showing base fronts or light boxes to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Check the defensive front pre-snap: if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to Inside Zone or HB Draw instead since counter needs numbers advantage on the backside. Use the misdirection to your advantage against teams that key on flow, since aggressive linebackers biting on the initial step get sealed by the pulling guard. Pair this with Mtn Counter and Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep defenders guessing between different run angles out of a similar backfield look. Manually control your lead blocker (the pulling guard or TE) after the snap to smash the first unblocked defender and create the cleanest possible cutback lane for your HB.
