Breakdown

PA Seam Digs is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Flex Y Off that uses run-fake blocking up front to hold linebackers before releasing three vertical stems into a dig-heavy combo. The play diagram shows two receivers to the left running vertical stems that break into digs crossing the middle of the field, a receiver on the right side (in red) running a deep seam or post up the numbers, and an underneath outlet (blue) working a shallow flat/drag route as a checkdown or hot route beater. This is primarily a man beater against off coverage since the seam and digs create natural picks and separation against trailing defenders, though it also stresses zone defenders who have to sink and cover multiple crossing routes at once. The primary read progression starts at the deep seam on the right, works down to the far dig, then checks down to the underneath flat route if the seam and dig windows are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high safety cheating to the middle of the field signals Cover 1 or Cover 3, which leaves the deep seam vulnerable to a one-on-one throw. Watch linebacker depth and spacing before the snap, since linebackers sitting too shallow or crashing hard on run action will get exposed by the digs settling into the intermediate middle voids. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flashing into a lurk spot in the shallow middle, as this is the primary threat to the underneath drag and can bait a bad read if the quarterback stares down that route too long. Identify blitz timing by watching for extra rushers crossing the line quickly after the snap, since play-action naturally slows your drop and can leave you exposed if protection breaks down before the digs cross the field. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with linebackers that stay square and drop hard into the middle third, since that coverage takes away both the seam and the digs simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake with a full ball fake on the stick before releasing into your drop, since defenders keying run flow will bite and open passing windows underneath. Use this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to load the box for run support. Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells: single high (Cover 3 or Cover 1) opens the seam route big because there is only one deep defender to cover the middle, while two high shells force you to lean on the digs sitting down in the intermediate zones. If you see man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on your outside receivers, prioritize the digs since the crossing action creates natural rubs and separation versus man defenders trailing. Pair this play with Four Verticals or X Dagger in your call sheet to keep the defense honest on seam and vertical shots, then come back with PA Seam Digs once the defense starts sitting on shorter routes. Against aggressive blitz-heavy defenses, hot route the underneath flat to a quicker option or slide protection to buy extra time for the digs to develop.
