Trips X Nasty is the tight bunch variant of Shotgun trips, packing the slot and tight end into a compressed nasty split next to the trips side while the X receiver stands isolated on the backside. The 11 personnel grouping keeps a receiving back in the gun and a TE detached rather than inline, so you get spread spacing without sacrificing the option to gap-scheme run with Inside Zone, HB Off Tackle, and HB Mid Draw. The nasty alignment is the key differentiator from standard Shotgun Trips: the condensed splits shrink the throwing windows defenders have to cover, force zone defenders to pass off crossers, and create natural rub traffic on Hi Lo Cross, Quick Unders, and Verticals X Shallow without you needing to hot route anything.
The backside X is the whole point of the alignment. With three bodies stacked to the strong side, defenses have to declare rotation, which usually leaves your best outside receiver in single coverage on an island. That makes Quick Short Post, WR Smash, and Mtn Drag Sluggo lethal isolation calls when you have an SLWR who wins press. If the defense stays balanced instead, the trips side gets outnumbered leverage and the flood concepts (Mtn Spot Y Corner, Mtn Stick Wheel, Switch HB Wheel) attack the same defender at three levels.
Where this set separates itself in competitive play is the wheel and vertical package. Switch HB Wheel, Slot Fade H Wheel, Mtn Slot Fades, and Mtn Stick Wheel all release out of compressed splits, which means the wheel runner is already inside the numbers and has the full width of the field to run to. Against Cover 3 and single-high shells that squeeze the seam, those wheels get behind the curl-flat defender before the deep third can rotate. Add the 3DRB tag with Mtn HB Swing and HB Slip Screen for checkdowns and pressure relief, and you have a set that can play fast on every down without a personnel substitution tell.
Read the safeties first: single-high means go to the wheel package (Switch HB Wheel, Mtn Slot Fades) to attack the vacated flat, while two-high means work the middle with Hi Lo Dig, Snag Slot Digs, or Quick Short Post to the isolated X.
Count the box on early downs. If the defense subs into a light box to match the trips look, check to Inside Zone or HB Off Tackle and let the Power HB tag carry you into second and short.
When you see press bunch or heavy trips side rotation, get to the backside X immediately with WR Smash or Mtn Drag Sluggo. The corner is on an island with no help.
On third down against blitz-heavy opponents, HB Slip Screen and Mtn HB Swing are your pressure answers. Set them up earlier in the drive with Quick Fork Zig so the defense respects the underneath spacing.
Use PA X Cross Shot after establishing Inside Zone and HB Mid Draw. The play action rollout freezes the linebackers and the X crosser hits behind vacated zone coverage for a chunk gain.
