Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty is a base zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and a bunched trips look to the right, plus a tight Y attached to the formation. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the RB reads the leverage of the defensive line to pick his lane. This is a downhill run play with no pass option shown, so the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback to frontside bounce, based on how the defensive front flows and where the double teams create movement.

Defensive Reads

Read the defensive tackle alignment pre-snap, if they are shaded hard to one gap the zone blocking scheme will have an easier time creating a clean double team on the other side. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting too far downhill get sealed easily by the second level blocks, while linebackers playing patient and reading their gaps can blow this play up. This run beats light boxes and teams that spread out to cover the trips bunch with extra defensive backs, leaving fewer bodies to stop the interior run. Stacked fronts with an extra linebacker or safety cheating into the box shut this down quickly, especially if the user takes over the middle linebacker and stays square. Look for user blitz timing off the edge, since Inside Zone has no built in escape valve, a well timed edge blitz that is not accounted for by the zone scheme can force a negative play if the RB does not cut it back fast enough.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light fronts with six or fewer defenders in the box.

Use the trips bunch alignment to bait the defense into rotating extra defenders to that side, which opens up cutback lanes on the backside.

Motion is not shown here, but pairing this call with Mid Zone from the same set keeps linebackers honest and prevents them from crashing hard on zone flow.

Run this on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action later in the drive.

If the defense shows a stacked box or blitz look pre-snap, check out of Inside Zone into a quick game concept like Quick Unders or Quick Short Post from the same formation to punish overaggressive fronts.
