Breakdown

Hi Lo Cross is a levels-based crossing concept out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty that stacks two crossers at different depths to attack man and zone coverage alike. The backside X runs a deep over that clears out the top of the defense while the trips side stacks a shallow drag underneath a deeper crossing route from the slot, creating a natural high low read against linebackers and nickel defenders. The inline TY (nasty formation tight end) releases into a short flat or drag route as a checkdown, and the HB stays in as protection with a shallow release to the boundary. Primary progression starts with the deep crosser working from the trips side, then works down to the underneath drag, and finally to the HB or flat route if both crossers are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since two high shells put extra eyes on the deep crosser and can jump the route late. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the shallow drag the deep crosser working behind them becomes the primary answer. Zone defenses with a robber or hole defender sitting in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this concept since they can undercut both crossers. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep crosser rubbing off traffic created by the underneath drag route. Blitz-heavy looks with five or six man pressure can disrupt this play since both crossers take time to develop, so check for blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this against teams that show single high safety pre-snap since the deep crosser will have room to work across the middle of the field away from help.

If you see man coverage, hot route the underneath drag into a shallow crossing route to create more separation off the initial break against tight man defenders.

This play is best called on second or third and medium since the double crosser combo takes a few seconds to develop and needs time for the quarterback to climb the ladder of reads.

Pair this play with Snag Slot Digs or Quick Unders in the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and developing crossers off similar initial formation looks.

Watch for user linebackers spying the middle of the field and be ready to check down to the HB or TY release if a rat in the hole squats on the shallow drag.
