Breakdown

Mtn Spot Y Corner is a Cover 3 beater out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty (11 personnel) that uses a pre-snap motion man across the formation into a shallow drag underneath, while the trips side runs the classic Spot concept combined with a corner route. The backside X runs a vertical clear-out to stretch the deep third, the middle trips receiver runs a corner route up the seam and out, and the inside slot runs a hitch/curl to the flat area with the third receiver popping to the corner spot underneath. Pass protection is a standard 5-man slide with the HB releasing on motion, so this is a straight drop-back pass play, not play-action or an RPO. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against the deep third defender, works down to the underneath curl/flat combo for the Spot concept, and finishes with the shallow drag as the check-down against zone leverage or blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety rotated to the middle of the field signals Cover 3 and tells you the corner route is live against the deep third defender. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route or gets stuck reading the Spot concept, the underneath curl and shallow drag will be wide open behind him. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, a hard flat-footed drop into the seam suggests zone and opens throwing lanes for the corner and drag combo. Man coverage shells with press corners on the trips side are the biggest threat to this play, since the corner route loses its zone-clearing advantage and can get undercut by a trailing defender with no help. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the 5-man slide protection can be exposed by a well-timed nano blitz, forcing a quick check to the shallow drag or motion man as an outlet.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and should key the corner route against a single defender.

This play is a premier Cover 3 beater, so save it for situations where you see two deep safeties rotate to a single high safety post-snap, the corner route will sit right in the hole vacated by the flat defender.

On third and medium, target the corner route first since it clears out the deep third defender and creates a natural pick window against zone drops.

Pair this with Mtn Stick Wheel or Mtn Slot Stick Nod earlier in a series so the defense respects the shallow drag and hitch combos, then hit them with the corner route shot when they start jumping the underneath routes.

If you get man coverage with no safety help over the top, use the shallow drag motion man as a hot route outlet and take the easy yardage instead of forcing the corner throw into a trail defender.
