Snag Slot Digs is a trips concept out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty that combines a deep dig from the outside trips receiver with an underneath snag concept from the two inside slot receivers, while the backside X runs an over route into the far flat and the in-line TE releases into a shallow drag with an added flat option. The outside trips receiver runs the deep red dig across the middle at roughly 15 yards, the middle trips receiver runs a corner breaking route underneath it, and the inside slot receiver sits down for the snag hitch, creating a high low read on the strong side while the backside receiver clears out horizontally. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by stretching the flat to intermediate hook zones vertically and horizontally, with the primary read starting on the dig and working down to the snag and corner underneath.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker and safety depth pre-snap, since a single high safety alignment signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this play is designed to exploit with the deep dig. Watch for a robber or hook defender sitting in the middle of the field post-snap, as that defender can undercut the dig route and force the quarterback to check down to the snag or corner underneath. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect Cover 4 or Cover 2, which condenses the throwing window for the dig and makes the snag concept underneath the more reliable read. Look for a user-controlled defender flying to the flat or spying the shallow drag, since that indicates the defense is selling out to stop the underneath option and opening up the intermediate corner route. Recognize man coverage by tight press alignment on the trips receivers, which is unfavorable for this concept since the routes are designed to sit down and read zone leverage rather than separate from man defenders.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high safety look because that confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which struggle against the dig sitting behind linebackers and in front of the deep safety.
Start your read on the deep dig coming across the field since it is the primary route against zone drops, and only work down to the snag and corner combo underneath if the middle of the field is closed by a robber or hook defender.
Use the backside over route as a hot read against man coverage or if you see blitz pressure, since it clears out horizontally and can be an easy checkdown versus Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.
Pair this play with Hi Lo Dig or Hi Lo Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between similar route distributions, forcing linebackers to respect both shallow crossers and deep digs.
Best called on second or third and medium to long since the dig needs time to develop, so protect the pocket with quick game like Quick Unders on earlier downs to set up the defense for this shot.
