Switch HB Wheel out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty is a man beater built around a switch release concept on the trips side and an isolated wheel route from the backfield. The trips receivers cross at the snap, with the two inside men running a shallow drag/mesh underneath while the outside trips receiver climbs vertically up the seam, and the single receiver to the backside runs a deep corner or go route to hold that defender. The HB releases out of the backfield into a wheel route up the sideline, working from underneath the mesh traffic to the flat and up the numbers, giving the quarterback a natural progression from the switch release crossers to the HB wheel against man coverage leverage.

Usage Tips

Use this play against man coverage looks, especially when you see a linebacker or safety walked up over the HB pre-snap since the wheel is designed to win that matchup once the switch release clears the underneath traffic

Motion is not needed here, but check the flat defender and any potential blitzer aligned near the backfield before the snap since the HB has to release clean to sell the wheel

Progression should start with the crossers coming off the switch release since they occupy underneath zone defenders and man defenders getting picked, then work to the HB wheel as your explosive shot play

Hot route the backside single receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose zone coverage, since the deep route on that side is mainly there to occupy a safety in man beater situations

Pair this with Mtn Stick Wheel or Slot Fade H Wheel in the same set to condition the defense on wheel action from different alignments, then come back to this switch release version to create hesitation on flat defenders
