Breakdown

Quick Unders is a quick game passing concept out of Trips X Nasty that attacks the middle of the field with layered underneath routes. From the trips side, the inside slot runs a deep dig across the field while the outside two receivers work a corner route and an in cut that settles underneath it, creating a natural high low read on the strong side. The backside X runs a deep corner breaking away from the trips, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline for a checkdown or coverage buster against man defenders. This is a quick pass designed to beat both man and zone coverage with fast underneath throws, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow in cut, moves to the crossing dig, and finishes with the HB wheel against blown coverage.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and alignment, since a two high shell with soft corners tells you the underneath in cut and dig will have room to work before the safeties can close. Look at linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the middle of the field the dig will be contested but the in cut and HB wheel open up. Post snap identify any user controlled defender flowing to the trips side early, that is a sign the CPU or opponent is keying the crosser and you should reset to the corner route or the HB wheel on the backside. This concept struggles against aggressive man press with no help over the top, since the in cut and dig can get jumped by physical corners playing trail technique. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner sitting in a shallow zone lurk near the numbers, since that defender can undercut the in cut route if he reads your quarterback's eyes.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense is showing two high or single high safety since this concept thrives against zone shells that leave the underneath crossers open. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the trips side, hot route the inside receiver to a quick option or slant to speed up the timing. On third and short or third and medium this play is a great call because the in cut and dig sit right at the sticks for an easy conversion. Watch for the HB wheel as a home run shot if the defense rolls coverage away from the backfield or if a linebacker widens late trying to cover the flat. Pair this with Mid Zone or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series to get defenders sitting on the run fake, then come back to Quick Unders to hit the crossers in space once linebackers start creeping up. Use Mtn Stick Wheel or Mtn Slot Stick Nod as complementary calls if the defense adjusts to jump the in cut route after seeing this concept once.
