Pistol Y Trips takes the balanced backfield depth of Pistol and pairs it with a three receiver surface to the strong side, putting the tight end in the slot alignment as the Y in trips while the single receiver isolates on the backside. Unlike Pistol Bunch or Pistol Slot sets that compress the formation, Y Trips spreads the field horizontally without sacrificing the quarterback's downhill run read, because the back is stacked directly behind the passer rather than offset. That alignment matters in Madden: the run game stays two way (HB Stretch, Pin Pull Sweep, Strong Power, HB Counter, HB Zone Wk all work to either side without tipping direction pre-snap) and Read Option plus PA Read give you legitimate RPO and zone read looks off the same shell.
The 11 personnel grouping is what makes this set dangerous in coverage. Defenses that stay in base or nickel have to declare how they will handle the trips side, and if they leave a linebacker or safety on your tight end at the number two spot, you have a size and route running mismatch you can attack immediately with Y Stick, Y Trail, or a hot routed corner. The SLWR tag means your slot receiver is a primary target inside, so quick game concepts like Curls and Smash create high low reads against Cover 3 and Cover 2 without needing motion. The isolated backside X gets one on one leverage on nearly every snap, which is exactly what Four Verticals and Mtn Corner Strike are built to exploit.
The Gadget tag opens up misdirection layers that most Pistol sets do not carry. PA Ctr Waggle and PA Comebacks pull the quarterback off the spot after selling interior run action, and the screen package (WR Screen, HB Slip Screen, Mtn HB Slip Screen) punishes aggressive edge pressure and users who commit to the trips side early. Combine that with HB Draw, Mtn HB Draw, and HB Dive as tempo changers and you have a set that runs a complete offense out of one formation without ever showing your hand before the snap.
Read the alignment over the number two receiver first. Linebacker or safety on your tight end means run Y Stick or Y Trail immediately. A true nickel corner on him means go to the run game or a backside iso concept instead.
Against single high shells, hot route the slot to a corner off Curls or Smash to create a high low with the outside route and force the safety to declare which one he takes.
On third and medium, Y Stick and Curls are your money reads, but block the back or hot route him to a flat if you see two blitzers over the center, because interior pressure is this set's fastest kill.
Establish HB Stretch and Pin Pull Sweep early to pull the safety down, then hit Four Verticals or Mtn Corner Strike on the isolated X once the defense shows single high with a compressed box.
Use HB Slip Screen and WR Screen as your punish calls when the opponent starts sending edge pressure or committing a user defender to the trips side, and Mtn HB Draw to reset tempo after a negative play.
